First Mamta Banerjee and now Samajwadi Party also gave a big blow to Congress, boycotted JPC
The cracks in the opposition unity have become clearly visible over the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed on three important bills that remove the Prime Minister, Chief Minister and Ministers from their posts in case of arrest for 30 days. After Trinamool Congress (TMC), now Samajwadi Party (SP) has also boycotted this committee. This has put the Congress in a dilemma, which was in favor of joining the JPC till now.
Akhilesh Yadav’s sharp opposition to the thinking of the bill
Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav termed this bill as “wrong thinking” and said that if Home Minister Amit Shah himself has said that false cases were filed against him, then what is the justification of such a law. He called it against the federal structure of India and said that state governments can withdraw criminal cases at their own level, while the interference of the Center will be limited.
TMC called JPC a ‘tamasha’
TMC had already made it clear that it would not send any member to this committee. The party called the JPC a “sham” and said that the committee has become a political tool instead of transparency. Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien described the government as “weak” on social media and alleged that the Center remained defensive throughout the monsoon session and tried to obstruct the proceedings.
Three bills that are in discussion
Union Territory Government (Amendment) Bill 2025, Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025, Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill 2025 All these bills are very much in discussion these days. These bills have a provision that if a minister, chief minister or prime minister remains in jail for 30 consecutive days on a serious charge, he can be removed from the post.
The government introduced these bills in the last days of the monsoon session and has directed the JPC to submit its report in the winter session, which is likely in the third week of November.
Questions on opposition unity
The boycott by TMC and SP has raised questions on the unity of the opposition INDIA alliance. Congress is now under pressure to either join this committee or take the path of protest. This development may affect the political equations in the upcoming sessions.
