Debate intensifies in saint society over comments on Premanand Maharaj, Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand gave a sharp reaction

After the comments made by Jagadguru Rambhadracharya on Saint Premanand Maharaj, a new debate has erupted in the saint society. Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati of Jyotish Peeth gave a sharp reaction to this controversy and supported Premanand Maharaj and said that he is chanting the name of God in Sanskrit throughout the day. He raised the question that if it is not visible, then is it not heard either?

Swami Avimukteshwaranand said, “It is being said that the yellow-robed Mahatma Premanand ji of Vrindavan does not know a single letter of Sanskrit. But what is the need for him to know Sanskrit, when he is propagating the name of God throughout the day. God’s name is in Sanskrit only.” He further asked, “Radhey-Radhey, Krishna-Krishna, Govind-Govind, Gopal-Gopal – which language do all these words belong to? Are these not Sanskrit words?”

Shankaracharya clarified that Premanand Maharaj’s job is to make people remember the name of God and he is doing this work through Sanskrit. He said, “The person who is chanting the name of God all day is speaking Sanskrit. If you cannot hear it, then it is a matter of your understanding.”

The controversy started with a podcast of Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, in which he questioned Premanand Maharaj’s knowledge of Sanskrit and said, “I challenge Premanand to speak even a single letter of Sanskrit or tell the meaning of my shlokas, then I will consider him miraculous.” This statement led to sharp reactions in the saint community. However, after the controversy escalated, Rambhadracharya clarified that his comment was not inappropriate. He called Premanand Maharaj his son and said that whenever he comes to meet him, he will embrace him with all his heart.
